Phillip Gaffney

Head Men's Basketball Coach

Phil Gaffney enters his second season as the Head Coach of the Men's Basketball program.

During his first season as Head Coach, Coach Gaffney guided his team to a 24-7 overall record (0.774 winning %). Under Gaffney's leadership the Commodores earned 2nd place in the Panhandle Conference and won the Region VIII Championship (first time in team history since 1972). Due to COVID-19 the 2020 NJCAA National Championship was cancelled.

Crusader kings 2 china mod. Coach Gaffney comes to Gulf Coast State College from Georgia Highlands College where he spent eight seasons as Head Coach and also served as the Athletic Director. Guilford Technical Community College in Jamestown, North Carolina, where he held the position of athletics director since 2005. He also coached men’s basketball at GTCC, as well as Mohawk Valley Community College in Utica, New York, Columbia-Greene Community College in Hudson, New York and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore in Princess Anne, Maryland.

Gaffney has enjoyed success coaching at the Junior College level setting the record for most wins in a season at four different schools, Georgia Highlands (34), Guilford Tech (28), Mohawk Valley (27), and Columbia-Greene (22). He led Georgia Highlands, in just their third year of existence, to the National Tournament in Hutchinson, KS and a “Final Four” appearance, losing to the National Champion in a semi-final overtime game. GHC won more games in the 2015 National Tournament (3) than any other team in history from the state of Georgia. This past year, GHC led the nation in wins (34), and reached the “Final Four” in the 2016 National Tournament. All four colleges he has coached at have achieved top 5 National rankings under his direction. Gaffney has been named Region Coach of the Year seven times. He has coached eight All-Americans, and eight Region Players of the Year. His teams have amassed over 430 wins in his 21 years as a head coach. Six former players went on to play professionally.

He started the athletic programs at Guilford Tech and Georgia Highlands College from scratch, building them into nationally known programs. During Gaffney’s tenure as Director of Athletics at Guilford Tech, three of his four athletic teams earned national rankings. Three teams won Region X Championships; two athletes were named Division I All-Americans. Three different coaches received Coach of the Year honors. At Georgia Highlands, the women’s basketball team earned an unprecedented #6 national ranking in their inaugural season. Three of the four athletic teams have achieved National rankings, with all four programs winning Regional playoff games. Both the men’s and women’s basketball teams won Region 17 Championships in 2016, with the men’s team also winning one in 2015. The women’s team reached the “Sweet Sixteen” while the men reached back to back “Final Fours”.

Gaffney holds a Bachelor of Science in physical education from the State University of New York College at Brockport.

Assistant Men's Basketball Coach

Scott Jackson will enter his sixth season with the Gulf Coast State College Men's Basketball program.

Prior to coming to Gulf Coast State, Coach Jackson spent 2 years as an assistant coach for Pensacola State College Men's Basketball team. He was responsible for academics and player development for the team and helped Pensacola State win the 2013-2014 Panhandle Conference title, their first title in 15 years. In 2 years at Pensacola State, he coached 3 First Team All-Panhandle Conference Team players and 4 Second Team All-Panhandle Conference Team players. He had 6 players sign Division 1 and 3 players sign Division 2 scholarships.

Before coaching basketball at Pensacola State, Coach Jackson spent 1 year with the PSC baseball team. He has also coached baseball collegiately at Indiana University, Butler University, Wabash Valley Junior College, and spent 9 years coaching high school baseball.

Coach Jackson will be responsible for recruiting, academics, player development, and scouting for the program. He is from Bloomington, IN. He graduated from Indiana University with a B.A. in Sports Communications. He played basketball and baseball for Bloomington North HS.

Ward Griffith

Assistant Men's Basketball Coach

Ward Griffith enters his second season with the Gulf Coast State College Men's Basketball program.

Griffith spent the 2018-19 season as assistant coach at Union College, Kentucky, where he was instrumental in the team winning both the regular season and the Appalachian Athletic Conference Tournament championships. The team also earned a bid to the NAIA National Championship Tournament.

Griffith spent six seasons at Miami-Dade College as an assistant coach. As primary recruiter, he recruited and coached 23 players who earned FCSAA All-Southern Conference recognition. In 2017, he was named one of the nation’s Top 25 NJCAA Assistant Coaches by CoachStat.

Griffith previously served as head coach at Southeast Career Technical Academy in Henderson NV.

Griffith began his basketball career at national powerhouse DeMatha Catholic High School. He graduated with a B.S. degree in Education from Mississippi State University where he was a member of the men's basketball team under head coaches Richard Williamson and Rick Stansbury. He was a Southeastern Conference All-Academic selection. After graduation, Griffith spent three years on the men’s basketball staff at the University of South Alabama under head coach John Pelphrey.

Jason Carpenter

Assistant Men's Basketball Coach

Jason Carpenter enters his Second Season as the Assistant Coach for both the GCSC Men's and Women's Basketball Programs.

Carpenter spent the 2018-19 season as Assistant Coach at Georgia Highlands College, helping to guide the Chargers to a 21-11 overall record and a NJCAA Region 17 Runner-Up finish.

Carpenter spent two seasons at Mohawk Valley CC as the Assistant Men's Basketball Coach in 2007 and 2008 before taking over the Women's Basketball program in 2009. During his nine seasons as Head Coach, Carpenter's teams compiled an overall record of 232-50 including 5 NJCAA District A Championships and 7 Conference Championships.

Carpenter began his basketball career at Mohawk Valley CC and was a Two-Year member of the Men's Basketball Team. Upon graduating from Mohawk, Carpenter attended SUNY ONEONTA where he majored in History and was Assistant Coach of the Men's Basketball Team 2004 through 2006.
